As many of you already know, I'm training to participate in the Fight 4 the Cause this year. What's that you ask? It's a black-tie gala boxing event put on annually by Studio 4 Athletics at the Empress Hotel to raise money for several local charities. In just three years, the event has raised over $60,000 for some of this City's most deserving do-gooders.
The gist of the event is this: Studio 4 Athletics takes a couple dozen local personalities who have little to no boxing experience, runs them through a grueling professionally led 8 week boxing training camp and puts them in the ring for three, two minute rounds against a boxer of equal size and ability. The ring isn't just some mat in a back room of some sweaty gym somewhere either, it's in the Grand Ball Room of the historic Empress Hotel in front of 1800+ of your closest friends, all dressed to the nines and anticipating one helluva show!
For about a month now, I've been working out at Studio 4 Athletics 3-4 times a week learning how to avoid getting punched in the face. It's been a sweaty endeavor, but it's all starting to get a little less awkward, and I'm beginning to really look forward to the next few months of this challenge.
The 8 week training camp is led by professional boxing coaches and facilitated by fitness trainers and nutritional experts to help participants get into the best fighting shape possible. We, as fighters, are asked to put together $1500 to demonstrate our commitment to the cause, and to pay for all the training. While most fighters will likely have a sponsor, my natural sponsor, Shatterbox, is still paying for its recent move and doesn't have the funds necessary to cover the cost. A couple weeks ago I put a poster and a jar on the bar asking for donations, and the Shatterbox community has already raised over $400! I'm already so proud and so grateful of the Shatterbox community. I firmly believe that we can put together the rest of the $1000+ in the five or six weeks until the start of the training camp - I mean, it's really just $10 from 100 people!
Anyway, I'd be honoured and extremely grateful if you'd help me fund this truly exciting challenge. Last year Fight 4 the Cause raised $25,000 for charities like the Mustard Seed, Power to Be, Free the Children, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Help fill a Dream, Tanelles Journey, and more! Please come in, give what you can, and I'll try and make you proud!
